Common Water Line Issues Include:

Low Water Pressure
A change in water pressure at your home or business can be caused by a variety of issues, but the most costly cause could be a water line leak. Water line leaks are caused by a variety of issues, ranging from repeated micro vibrations, to faulty fittings or connections. There are a variety of troubleshooting options to help determine cause, but the most important step is to investigate further. If the leak is not obvious, Nixcavating can often help determine the location of the leak, but in situations where the water line is plastic and/or runs a long distance, calling in a professional leak detection company would be a wise choice.

Sediment Build-Up
If sediment or rust is visible in the water, old, cracked, or eroded pipes could be the culprit, but those issues are generally interior, and you would need to contact a licensed plumber.
If your water looks dirty, there may have been construction on the water main line in your area recently, which may have stirred up sediment in the line. The water line should clear on its own with time, but additional troubleshooting and tips are detailed below.

Helpful Tips for a Water Outage:

Before the Water Outage:

1. Fill pots on the stove with water for cooking
2. Fill buckets with water for washing
3. Fill potable water containers for drinking, assume one gallon, per person, per day
4. Fill bathtubs or additional buckets to flush toilets. A toilet will flush when approx. one gallon of water is dumped in the bowl

During the Water Outage:
Please try not to turn on your faucet, this will help prevent air from entering your plumbing.

After the Water Outage:
When your water line or the service main line is disturbed, you might notice discolored water temporarily. The discolored water is from sediment getting stirred up by the repair and repressurization of the line. The water should clear on its own with some time.

To ensure your water line is clear before using, run an exterior faucet until the water runs clear. If you don’t have access to an exterior faucet, run the COLD water in a sink for a few minutes until it runs clear. If that doesn’t work, give it an hour or two, and run the COLD water in your bathtub or shower.

* Avoid running hot water while the water is discolored
* Don’t run the dishwasher or clothes washing machine, until your water is clear
* Rinse (or replace) the sink faucet aerators (screen) if you think your water flow is disturbed
